Revolutionizing Local Energy Planning to Tackle Global Challenges

Sympheny, a company launched by Empa (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology), was created as part of their mission to address global challenges in five key areas: energy, natural resources, health, the built environment, and novel materials.

Sympheny's vision is to optimize local energy planning for neighborhoods, villages, campuses, urban districts, new developments, and existing sites. To bring this innovative solution to market and make it accessible to customers, Sympheny partnered with Ing in January 2020.

Transforming Proof of Concept into a Market-Ready MVP

Before partnering with Ing, Sympheny had developed an internal proof-of-concept tool that encapsulated years of rigorous research. However, this tool was a command-line desktop application, lacking any UX design and requiring users to download and install it locally.

To advance their solution and bring it to market, Sympheny needed a reliable and dedicated product development partner. After thorough evaluation, they chose us to deliver their MVP on time and within budget.

Rapid MVP Development and Seamless Cloud Integration for Sympheny

We were tasked with developing the MVP version of Sympheny's SaaS product, and within two weeks of our initial contact, we had completed the discovery phase. During this phase, our business analyst gathered all necessary information, analyzed the project, and crafted a solid plan for the MVP, fully aligned with Sympheny’s vision.

The challenge of developing the MVP was twofold. First, we needed to collaborate closely with the Sympheny team to upgrade their tool into a system that could seamlessly integrate into a modern cloud-based architecture. Then, we had to build a cloud-based SaaS product around it.

Effective Planning: Key to Rapid MVP Development Success

The development phase was organized into six two-week sprints, during which our team faced numerous challenges. We were working against a tight schedule to complete the MVP while also planning for integration with Sympheny’s existing software components.

The MVP was completed in record time, enabling real estate developers and engineering consultants to start using this groundbreaking tool for planning energy supply for various sites and buildings.
